That Time President Obama “Popped Off” and What It Taught Me About Authenticity
“Folks Wanna Pop Off” – Barack Obama.
Two weeks later and it’s still funny and rather surprising coming from the leader of our free world, commander and chief of the armed forces, head dude in charge, and newfound shit-talker and shade thrower, our beloved President.
Since Obama’s last term in office, we’ve noticed he’s said exactly how he feels and he doesn’t sugarcoat it. He’s tired of people’s shit and isn’t playing Mr. Nice Guy anymore.
In simpler terms, Obama is being 100% himself.
And people like me love him for it.
A year ago, I was afraid of being myself. I didn’t want to put myself out there and preferred (read: demanded) to be behind the scenes. My code-switching was so good, that I was one person with my clients and colleagues and someone completely different with my friends and family. My blog posts were generic and boring. I didn’t want to take pictures. I didn’t attend networking events. I called myself a business owner, but I didn’t own it. I wanted to make money, but didn’t want to connect with people. I’m a web designer and help women rebrand their online business, but I didn’t want to be my own brand. People who knew me bragged about how smart I am, but it didn’t matter because nobody knew who the heck I was.
My thinking was ass backwards.
It wasn’t until I was tired of not making money in my business and having conversations with my mentor and business partners that I knew something had to change. I made a vow to myself earlier this year that I was going to attend at least 2-3 networking events each month. I was going to put myself out there online and promote my ass off in front of people I’d love to work with. I also promised to be myself at all times and allow my witty personality and brand of humor shine through.
I am hilarious! Yes. You can’t tell me any different.
And I swear a lot, if you haven’t noticed.
Once I made the bold decision, things took off! And guess what? I started making money in my business! This year was the first year I’ve experienced a huge level of success in my business all because I changed my mindset around authenticity.
Like my accountability partner said, “If Obama can go on live TV at a press conference at the G-20 summit and while answering a question about ISIS and criticize “Folks (who) wanna pop off” on ISIS without a plan, you too can be yourself in your business. Yes, you may ruffle some feathers, but you will be remembered and loved also, all for being yourself!”
So go forth and “pop off” on folks, figuratively speaking of course.
